Alta Vista Elementary-The Power of 1!

My name is Karmen Logan, and I am the proud principal of Alta Vista Elementary. This is my 28th year with Waco ISD and my 4th year at Alta Vista.  I love working at a campus with so many dedicated and caring staff members who truly put children first.

Our campus theme this year is the Power of 1.  At Alta Vista, we believe in the importance of teamwork and that includes not only our staff but also working with parents, families and the community to improve achievement for all students.  We believe our efforts individually are needed but our collective work as a team of staff, parents, students and community members will raise Alta Vista to new heights.

The Power of 1 also means that each one of us must do our part. As principal, I am dedicated to doing my part to develop a culture of not only caring but of high expectations for all our students. I will do that by monitoring instruction to ensure all staff have needed skills and resources to be effective.

The Power of 1 also means that we need our parents actively involved in their child’s education.  Some ways to do that is through communication with their child’s teacher, attending conferences and activities as possible. Each Wednesday, we send home the Voyager newsletter on blue paper to keep parents informed of events as a campus.  Your child’s classroom teacher will also be letting you know what your child is working on at school so you can support those efforts. You can also keep up with us on our website, Facebook and Twitter.

As a campus, we have instituted a limited homework policy because we believe your time with your children at home is important. However, we also know that children who read outside of school are more successful than those who don’t. One of our goals as a campus is to foster a love of reading with our students.  The most important thing you can do as a parent is to encourage a love of reading by providing and expecting your child to read at home each night.
